The Château Royal de Montargis is a 12th-century royal fortress with origins dating to medieval times, becoming property of the French Crown in 1188 under Philippe Auguste. In the 14th century, it was transformed into a luxurious Renaissance residence by Charles V, and later served as a cultural refuge under the protection of Renée de France. Though partially destroyed after the French Revolution, the castle's impressive ruins including ramparts, postern gates, and partially reconstructed Renaissance gardens remain a significant testament to royal French heritage in the Loire Valley.
