Château du Haut-Ribeaupierre is the oldest of three Ribeauvillé castles, documented from 1084 and built on a former Roman site for the Counts of Eguisheim. At 642 meters altitude, it overlooks both the village and its companion fortresses. Originally called Altenkastel, it passed to Anselme de Ribeaupierre in 1288 and served as a notable prison, confining dignitaries including the English knight John Harleston. Now featuring an imposing circular donjon undergoing renovation, the castle remains freely accessible via strenuous hiking paths, rewarding visitors with extensive views and remnants of medieval military architecture.
