Château des Milandes is a 15th-century Renaissance manor set in the scenic Dordogne Valley near Castelnaud-la-Chapelle. Originally built around 1489 by François de Caumont, the château stands in elegant contrast to the medieval fortresses of Périgord Noir with its refined architecture and panoramic views over the river valley. The estate gained international prominence as the residence of Josephine Baker, the renowned performer and civil rights activist who purchased the property in 1936 and adopted twelve children from around the world as part of her "Rainbow Tribe" experiment. Today the château houses a museum documenting Baker's extraordinary life and contains gardens awarded the "Remarkable Garden" label, with seasonal birds of prey demonstrations featuring falcons, owls, and eagles.
