Château de Mauléon is a fortified castle rising approximately 70 metres above the town of Mauléon-Licharre in the Pays Basque, dating from the 11th century with significant reinforcements added during English rule between 1272 and 1374. Perched on the high ground overlooking the Saison Valley, it earned recognition in the 15th century as "the strongest castle in Guyenne situated on its very high rock." The castle was classified as a historic monument in 1925 and features an exhibition recounting its tumultuous history. Its strategic position offers an unmissable viewpoint across Mauléon, the Saison Gave valley, and distant Pyrenean peaks, embodying the region's medieval heritage and defensive significance.
