Château de l'Etenduère

The Château de l'Étenduère in Les Herbiers, Vendée, represents an ancient lineage of nobility dating to the 11th century, evolving from a simple lodging in 1375 to a fortified noble stronghold by 1622. This fortress incorporated defensive features including gun emplacements, drawbridges, and machicolations reflecting its strategic importance during the Ancien régime. The estate's most celebrated resident was Henri-François des Herbiers-L'Estenduère (1681-1750), whose naval career culminated in the 1747 Battle of Cape Finisterre. Severely damaged during the Vendée Wars, the château's fragile remains were restored beginning in 2016 by the volunteer association Passion Patrimoine. Today, visitors can explore the château through a free-access heritage circuit, experiencing this significant architectural survivor and its compelling historical narrative.
