Château de Lastours, positioned strategically in the Châlus Mountains at the border between Limousin and Périgord, occupies one of France's most historically significant sites. Located 25 km southwest of Limoges in Haute-Vienne, construction began in the 12th century atop layers of habitation reaching back 8,000 years to Celtic times. The site retains three original feudal mounds, a partly collapsed 12th-century dungeon, and 14th and 16th-century architectural elements including round towers and courtines, demonstrating the evolution from feudal castles to Renaissance residences. Listed as a historic monument since 1956, the château is maintained by volunteer associations and hosts medieval summer festivals and public visits.
