Château de la Roche

Château de la Roche-en-Ardenne is an 11th-century medieval fortress perched dramatically on a rocky outcrop above the village of La Roche-en-Ardenne in Belgium's Luxembourg Province. The castle's rough slate walls rise steeply from a loop formed by the Ourthe River, commanding views across a lush valley. Dating to the 1100s, it served as a strategic stronghold on the major trade route transporting English wool to Lombardy. The French captured and rebuilt the fortress in 1681 to withstand modern artillery, and it remained inhabited until 1780 when it was abandoned. Today, visitors explore the atmospheric ruins on scenic trails accessible within minutes on foot or by bike from the village below.
