Château de La Marthonie rises along the banks of the Côle in Saint-Jean-de-Côle, in Périgord Vert within the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park. Origins trace to the 12th century when a defensive stronghold was built to protect the border between Limousin and Périgord; the castle was devastated by English forces in 1394 during the Hundred Years' War. The structure evolved through centuries, with a 15th-century core enhanced by a Renaissance wing added in the early 17th century, featuring an elegant gallery and restored grand salon. One of the most refined Renaissance residences in the region, it opens to guided tours during summer months by reservation.
