Château de Boumois is a 16th-century fortress built between 1520 and 1530 in Saint-Martin-de-la-Place near Saumur, Maine-et-Loire. Constructed for René de Thory and his wife Anne Assé on a site protected by the Loire River, the castle succeeded an earlier 13th-century fortress that was destroyed during the Hundred Years War. The building was completed by master mason Jean Pymotz, with work progressing from the main house and south wing to the vaulted kitchen and pantry facilities. Protected as a Historical Monument since 1953, the château encompasses defensive structures including enceinte walls and moats, representing a crucial evolution in French Renaissance defensive architecture.
