Château de Beynac

Château de Beynac is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in the Dordogne, built in the 12th century by the barons of Beynac, one of Périgord's four baronies. Dramatically perched 200 meters above the Dordogne River, the fortress features formidable defenses including double walls, double moats, and a commanding panoramic position that made it a crucial defensive stronghold during the Hundred Years War. Notable architectural features include a Romanesque keep, a grand Salle des États (State Room), a frescoed 15th-century chapel, and luxurious 16th- and 17th-century apartments. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., the castle offers stunning views along the Dordogne, while the adjacent medieval village of Beynac-et-Cazenac is classified among France's most beautiful villages.
