Château de Bayers occupies a commanding position overlooking the Charente river in Aunac-sur-Charente, about 30 kilometers north of Angoulême. Originally an 11th-century fortified quadrangle built to monitor a ford crossing, the castle was progressively refined into an elegant residence beginning in 1434 by Guillaume de La Rochefoucauld. The estate showcases medieval defensive elements including the old keep, dry moats, and a covered walkway with a corner turret, complemented by a 17th-century French garden terraced above the river. Following major restoration in the late 1980s, the château now welcomes seasonal summer visitors to explore its layered architectural heritage and scenic riverside setting.
