Alton Castle is a Grade I listed Gothic Revival fortress originally built in the 12th century as a stone stronghold overlooking the River Churnet valley in Staffordshire. The castle's distinctive appearance today owes much to its 19th-century transformation by renowned architect A.W.N. Pugin, whose Gothic Revival design enhanced its romantic character. Acquired by the Sisters of Mercy in 1919 and later converted into a Catholic Youth Retreat Centre, the castle now serves as a contemplative sanctuary with nature trails and peaceful gardens surrounding its dramatic hilltop position.
