Castle of Kruja

Castle of Kruja, or Kalaja e Krujës, perches dramatically at 550 meters above sea level north of Tirana, commanding spectacular views of Albanian valleys and the Adriatic Sea. Originally constructed in the 5th or 6th century by Byzantine forces, the fortress became legendary under Skanderbeg, the Albanian national hero who led resistance against Ottoman occupation following his 1443 rebellion. The castle successfully withstood three massive Ottoman sieges between 1450 and 1467 with remarkably small garrisons. Today, visitors explore the ruined watchtower, main gate, and museum buildings including the Skanderbeg National Museum and Ethnographic Museum, which chronicle 15th-century Albanian history and traditional cultural heritage.
