The Castle of Hamal, first mentioned in historical records in 1214, stands as the centre of the former independent lordship of Rutten near Tongeren in Limburg. Despite experiencing significant destruction during the 14th and 17th centuries and partial damage during the 1747 Battle of Lafelt, the castle was rebuilt in the 18th century in baroque and rococo style under Baron Haxhe. Today the castle remains a private residence, but the surrounding park with its moat, orangery, English garden, and chapel is open to visitors seeking a glimpse of its architectural heritage.
