Castle of Eljas

Castle of Eljas, a historic fortress in the Sierra de Gata mountains of Cáceres, Extremadura, occupies an elevated position at 595 meters overlooking the Erjas river valley toward the Portuguese border. The first fortifications were likely built during Islamic times, but the current structure was established between the 14th and 15th centuries as an Encomienda of the military Order of Alcántara. During the 17th century's conflict with Portugal, the castle gained strategic importance and was reformed, though it suffered considerable damage during the conflict. Now designated a Cultural Interest Asset, the fortress stands as a testament to centuries of strategic military history. Visitors can access the castle ruins via a pleasant walk from Eljas village, enjoying expansive views across the borderlands and the distinctive architecture of this regional landmark.
