Castle of Caracuel

Castle of Caracuel dates from the 9th century and represents a significant example of medieval military architecture in La Mancha's frontier region between Christian and Muslim territories. Originally Muslim-built, it underwent substantial Christian modifications during the 12th and 13th centuries following Alfonso VI's conquest of Toledo in 1085. The fortification changed hands multiple times as territorial boundaries shifted, though King Alfonso VIII definitively secured it for Christian control in 1212. The castle features an impressive pentagonal tower rising approximately 10 meters with three interior levels, a square-enclosed fortress perimeter with defensive towers, and remnants of storage cisterns that illuminate daily castle life. Access is restricted due to safety concerns related to its ruined condition.
