Castle of Canfranc

Castle of Canfranc is a 16th-century fortress located in Canfranc, a municipality in the province of Huesca, Aragon, Spain. Built by order of Philip II following engineer Spanocchi's recommendations, the castle features a distinctive design with four corner towers and large dimensions, originally constructed as a defensive stronghold against French invasions. The architect's plans were inspired by Renaissance ideals of fortress design and reflect the military architectural standards of the late 16th century. Although largely destroyed during the construction of a road in 1928, the east wall remains standing. The Government of Aragon conducted consolidation and preservation work on the archaeological remains between 2005 and 2007, and the castle is recognized as a Cultural Interest Site.
