Castle Montilla

Castle Montilla occupies a strategic elevation overlooking the town of Montilla in Córdoba province, with construction dating to the 13th century when Ferdinand III granted these lands as a reward for support during the Reconquest. The fortress served as a frontier bastion between Christian and Muslim kingdoms and became the principal residence of the lords of Aguilar. By the 14th century, the Fernández de Córdoba family gained control, notably becoming the birthplace of Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, the legendary military commander known as the Great Captain. Though the medieval fortress was later demolished by royal order, an impressive 18th-century granary structure remains on the site with panoramic views of vineyards and surrounding countryside.
