Castle Bentomiz

Castle Bentomiz in Arenas, Málaga, is a historic Moorish fortress standing 711 meters above sea level near the village. Originally built by the Arabs and mentioned as Munt Mus in 11th-century chronicles of Abd-allah ibn Buluggin, the castle witnessed significant military campaigns including Ibn Hafsun's revolt in the 9th century. The 15th-century Catholic Monarchs seized the fortress and established it as a military outpost during the Reconquista. The structure comprises two distinct areas: a citadel at the highest northern point and a larger enclosure for civilian shelter. Though partially ruined, the castle's remaining walls, underground vaults, and towers provide panoramic views across La Axarquía region toward the Mediterranean coast, making it an important historical and scenic landmark.
