Castle Barrett

Castle Barrett, originally known as Castlemore, rests on a hillside near Mourne Abbey in County Cork south of Mallow, representing significant medieval Irish heritage. Initially mentioned in 1252 as Castle More, the structure was built by Brother John FitzRichard, a Knights Hospitaller, in 1335 to protect the nearby abbey. The castle later became the seat of the Barrett family in the Barony of Barretts, with William Barrett receiving the castle and the newly issued baronetcy title in 1661. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, the castle fell into ruin as its stones were dismantled and repurposed for road construction throughout the area. Today, three large earthen mounds mark the location where the castle once stood, serving as a tangible reminder of the Barretts' historical significance and the evolution of Irish baronial power through centuries of conflict and change.
