Castillo del Castellar

Castillo del Castellar sits on a strategic promontory in Bullas, Murcia region, positioned atop the mountain known as Peña Rubia with commanding views of the surrounding landscape. Of Muslim origin, the fortress was constructed between the 12th and 13th centuries before the Castilian conquest. Following the Mudéjar rebellion of 1264-1266, it was granted to the Order of the Temple along with its surrounding territories. The castle occupies an approximately 150-by-115-meter promontory with significant cliffs on its northern, southern, and eastern sides, strategically positioned to control the Mula River bed and observe the disappeared castle of Bullas. The fortress was formally designated a Cultural Heritage Site of Interest in 1997, and remains accessible via a hiking trail from the town below.
