Castillo del Asmesnal

Castillo del Asmesnal is a Gothic-style fortress constructed before 1446 by the Escobar family lords in the Asmesnal pasture near Alfaraz in Zamora's Sayago comarca, strategically positioned along a route between Peñausende and Ledesma. The castle played a significant defensive role during 15th-century Portuguese wars and traces its medieval roots to the Kingdom of León from the 12th century. Though partially preserved today with visible walls and defensive structures still evident, the castle has been designated part of Hispania Nostra's Red List of Spanish Heritage since 2008, reflecting its cultural importance and ongoing conservation needs.
