Castillo de Zagra

Castillo de Zagra crowns the hillside overlooking the town of Zagra in Córdoba province, its ruins preserving evidence of Arab medieval settlement and subsequent Christian conquest. The fortress, with its Arab origins clearly demonstrated through remaining defensive structures, once protected the kingdoms of Granada during the Nasrid period. The castle served defensive functions for Granadan rulers until the Christian conquest by the Catholic Monarchs, after which its strategic importance diminished as settlers established the modern town at the base of the hill. Only ruins remain of this medieval fortress, yet they continue to witness to the complex history of Islamic and Christian coexistence that shaped this Andalusian landscape.
