Castillo de Tudela

Castillo de Tudela is one of the most significant early medieval fortresses of the Kingdom of Asturias, located on the strategic hill of Picu Castiellu in Oviedo. Built by King Alfonso III around 883 to control and protect the roads to the royal capital, it overlooked the valley of the Nalón River and the ancient road to León. From its construction until the 15th century, the fortress played an important political, military, and socioeconomic role in central Asturias. The castle features ditches, embankments, surrounding walls, and a central tower as its principal lordly building. Though King Juan I ordered its demolition in 1383 along with other Asturian fortifications, the castle was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1965 and remains protected under Spanish Historical Heritage law.
