Castillo de Torrenovais

Castillo de Torrenovais, also known as Castillo de Os Novais, is a 10th-century fortress perched on a rocky crest in the village of Os Novais within the Quiroga municipality of Lugo province, Galicia. This imposing structure features exceptionally thick stone walls nearly four meters wide and a square floor plan with a semicircular-vaulted south-facing entrance, reflecting its serious defensive purpose. The castle likely stands upon ancient Suevi or Castizo foundations, though its medieval prominence grew when the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John of Jerusalem established a presence in the region during the 12th-13th centuries. Today, it remains a notable landmark in this semi-abandoned village, associated with local legend and architectural heritage that speaks to its roles in both religious and secular governance throughout its lengthy history.
