Castillo de Sant Jordi d'Alfama is a historic fortress perched on the dramatic cliffs of L'Ametlla de Mar in Catalonia, built in 1201 by the Order of Sant Jordi de Alfama to defend the Tarragona coast against piracy. The distinctive horseshoe-shaped fortification was heavily bombed and destroyed in 1650 during a sea attack, then comprehensively restored in the 18th century with much of the original structure preserved. Today, while the interior is not open to visitors, the exterior offers sweeping views of the rocky coastal landscape and the Mediterranean below, making it an evocative reminder of medieval frontier defense.
