Castillo de San Esteban de Gormaz, strategically positioned atop a hill in Soria province, is a medieval fortress dating to the early Reconquista period when it was repopulated by Count Gonzalo Fernández in 912. As one of the key "Gates of Castilla," it dominated the defensive line of the Duero River throughout the 10th and 11th centuries, changing hands frequently before definitively passing to Christian control. Built with carved ashlars of probable Roman origin, the castle features a long, narrow base later reformed by Christians, with interior remains of rooms, cisterns, and silos. Despite minimal surviving structures, the site offers panoramic views and remains historically significant in regional fortification networks.
