Castillo de Mirabel

Castillo de Mirabel, also known as Castillo de la Peña del Acero, occupies a dramatic hilltop near Mirabel in Cáceres province, offering magnificent views over the Tagus River and surrounding dehesa landscape. This 15th-century fortress was remodeled by the Zúñiga family after they received the Marquis of Mirabel title from King Charles I in 1535, converting an earlier Alfonsine fortification into an elegant residence with cisterns, storehouses, and improved defensive structures. Though only a large barrel-vaulted chamber and partial walls remain, the ruins continue to serve as a major attraction within the Monfragüe Biosphere Reserve, drawing visitors for its spectacular natural setting and panoramic vistas.
