Castillo de Melgarejo

Castillo de Melgarejo is a Late Medieval fortress located in Jerez de la Frontera, Cádiz, near the Jerez racing circuit, whose ownership by the Melgarejo family began in 1606. Archaeological investigations have uncovered settlements dating to the Copper Age and Early Bronze Age at the site, indicating long historical occupation. The castle's distinctive architecture features a square tower that transforms into an octagon at its upper section, crowned with crenellations and traces of original machicolations at each corner and on all four walls. A crenellated wall with a pointed archway bearing the Melgarejo family coat of arms marks the main entrance. Protected as a cultural asset since 1985, the castle today stands in consolidated ruin and is open to the public, offering insights into medieval Andalusian military architecture.
