Castillo de Mazuelo de Muñó

The Castillo de Mazuelo de Muñó stands in Estépar, Burgos, as one of the region's finest-preserved 14th-century fortifications. Constructed by either Juan Alfonso Carrillo during King Pedro I's reign or his son Pedro Carrillo in the early 15th century, the castle features a distinctive square tower crowned with triple corbelled machicolation crenellations. The fortress passed through notable ownership, including the Carrillo family, the Rojas family from 1466, and subsequently the Burgos cathedral chantre Andrés Ortega Cerezo. The structure's architectural excellence and strong preservation status reflect both its original construction quality and careful historical maintenance. Designated a Cultural Heritage Asset in 1991, this exemplary medieval fortress demonstrates the military sophistication and architectural refinement characteristic of high-status Castilian noble properties.
