Castillo de Marcuello

The Castillo de Marcuello rises on the sierra of the same name in Sarsamarcuello, near Loarre in Huesca province, dominating the entire Gállego valley from the Riglos straits to the plains approaching Huesca. Established before 1074, likely by King Sancho Ramírez of Aragon, the castle served as one of the principal Aragonese fortresses in the central Prepyrenees. It functioned as part of a geographic cluster with castles at Murillo, Agüero, Ayerbe, and the renowned Loarre fortress. Historians place its founding in the late 11th century, with records documenting its garrison until the early 12th century. The site encompasses the Romanesque hermitage of San Miguel, largely ruined, and the former parish church dedicated to the Virgin of Marcuello positioned at a dramatic precipice edge. Substantial ruins remain of the rectangular keep, with intact northern walls and evidence of an arched entrance door visible on surviving sections.
