Castillo de los Rojas

Castillo de los Rojas is an imposing fortress situated atop a hill overlooking Poza de la Sal in Burgos province, one of the most spectacular fortresses in the region. Originally built in the late 9th century by Count Diego Rodríguez Porcelos, the current castle was constructed in the 14th century by the Rodríguez de Rojas family over the earlier medieval foundations. Strategically positioned to control passages from La Bureba to El Páramo and guard the town's valuable salt mines, the castle features two prominent towers flanking the entrance courtyard, a protective moat, and surrounding walls. Now in consolidated ruin and owned by the municipality, the castle remains freely accessible and represents a crucial example of medieval Castilian defensive architecture.
