Castillo de las Torres

Castillo de las Torres is a late medieval fortress located near the Badajoz-Seville provincial border, with actual remains situated in Monesterio municipality though closest to El Real de la Jara in Seville province. The fortress was strategically positioned along the Vía de la Plata, a vital medieval trade and transhumance route, to control this important passage and border region. Its trapezoidal floor plan features circular towers at each corner and encompasses approximately 500 square meters of interior weapons courtyard. Based on constructive typology, the castle likely dates to the 15th or 16th century. The fortress formed part of the Baldíos de Calilla, communal lands of the Five Sister Villages, serving as a guardian of territorial interests during the late medieval period when border control remained strategically vital.
