Castillo de las Caldas o de Priorio

Castillo de las Caldas, also known as Castillo de Priorio, is a monumental complex located in the Las Caldas district near Oviedo, Asturias, situated on terrain surrounded by the Gafo River. The current crenellated fortress with two imposing flanking towers was constructed in the 19th century based on ruins of an earlier castle built during the reign of Alfonso II. The structure blends Romanesque and Gothic architectural styles, reflecting its layered historical development. Originally serving as an episcopal residence under the Bishops of Oviedo and later as a refuge for the rebellious nobleman Gonzalo Peláez, the castle embodies local legend and medieval power structures, though now largely hidden by surrounding vegetation.
