Castillo de Las Cabañas de Castilla

The Castillo de Las Cabañas de Castilla occupies a flat plain near the hamlet of Las Cabañas de Castilla within the municipality of Osorno la Mayor, Palencia province. Constructed during the mid-15th century by the prominent Castañeda family under commission by Gonzalo Muñoz de Castañeda, the fortress represents aristocratic military architecture of the late medieval period. The builder Fernan Gómez de Marañón oversaw its creation, and the castle subsequently passed among prestigious owners including the Count of Osorno and the Marquess of Villatorre. Recognized as a Heritage Site of Cultural Interest in 1949, the structure features a central tower surrounded by a square-plan enclosure built with ashlar stone. Four corner turrets rise from the upper body, with the Castañeda family coat of arms displayed prominently on each face. The tower's two-body construction with a subtle base slope demonstrates the practical elegance characteristic of 15th-century noble fortifications in Castile.
