Castillo de Jijona

Castillo de Jijona, known as Torre Grossa, dominates the skyline from the highest point of the town of Jijona in Alicante. Built by the Almohads between the late 12th and early 13th centuries, this fortress extends along the hilltop at 570 meters elevation and played a crucial role in defending the border of the medieval Kingdom of Valencia. The castle features the characteristic architectural style of Islamic fortifications and was later expanded with Christian construction after its 13th-century conquest. Today, the site is designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Cultural Asset of Interest), with ruins that tell the story of centuries of strategic importance and architectural heritage.
