Castillo de Doña Berenguela sits in the historic center of Bolaños de Calatrava, City Real province, representing a distinctive flat castle design characteristic of the 11th and 12th centuries. Originally built on Muslim foundations, the fortress was seized by Alfonso VIII after the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in 1212, then passed to his daughter Doña Berenguela as part of her dowry with the King of León. In 1229, Queen Berenguela ceded the castle to the Order of Calatrava, who expanded its role in controlling the frontier region. Designated as a Cultural Heritage Site of Interest in 1982, the castle remains municipally owned and serves the community through an active cultural and tourism program, offering visitors access to this significant medieval structure that symbolizes the complex political dynamics of medieval Iberia.
