Castillo Palacio de Castarné is a medieval fortress perched on a dramatic cliff in Montanuy, Huesca, originating from the 11th century. Known as Castro Negro for its dark appearance, this rectangular defensive tower measuring 7 by 7 meters guarded the last spur of the Baliera Valley. Built by the powerful Azcón and Oliver families who served as barons of Castarné, the castle features thick rubble masonry walls across three floors with natural protection from impassable cliff faces on two sides. The structure's commanding position provided strategic defense of the Muslim-origin town first documented in 979. Though partially restored, the castle remains a notable example of medieval Aragonese military architecture reflecting the region's rich feudal heritage.
