The Castillo de Cañada del Hoyo crowns the Buen Suceso hill in Cuenca, constructed during the 11th-12th centuries as an Almoravide watchtower on the border with Christian territories. After Alfonso VIII's 1178 conquest of Cuenca, it became a fortified frontier castle. The complex features a polygonal wall with hexagonal tower and substantial rectangular keep, while its distinctive octagonal Tower-Watchtower bears the coat of arms of Juan Pacheco, first Marquis of Villena. Following restoration in 1839 as an Isabelline stronghold during the Carlist Wars, the castle now functions as private property with limited interior access, though its imposing stone silhouette remains visible across the surrounding rural landscape.
