Castillo de Burgos

Castillo de Burgos is a historic fortress perched on San Miguel Hill, offering panoramic views across the city of Burgos and symbolizing the birthplace of Castile. Built in 884 by Count Diego Porcelos as a defensive structure, the castle played a vital role during the Spanish Reconquista. Surviving fire in 1736 and destruction by Napoleon's troops in 1813, the fortress was restored to offer visitors a glimpse into medieval military engineering. Notable features include subterranean galleries, a deep well, and towers providing observation decks with unobstructed views of the cathedral and medieval streets. A small museum covers the town's history with displays of original castle foundations, and admission is free.
