Castillo de Benizar

Castillo de Benizar crowns a dramatic rocky outcrop above the village of La Tercia in Murcia, dominating the entire valley with its commanding presence. Originally constructed during Muslim rule between the 11th and 12th centuries, it was rebuilt in 1347 by Rui Chacón, Commander of Caravaca. The fortress combines both practical defense and engineering ingenuity, featuring an enclosure on the hilltop and a keep on a protruding rocky formation rising over 40 meters high, originally accessed only by rope ladder or wooden stairs. Despite ownership changes over centuries, including its 17th-century cession to a hermitage, the castle remains designated as a Cultural Interest Property and stands as an impressive example of medieval Murcian fortification.
