Castillo de Belmez commands attention from its position atop a high limestone rocky outcrop in northwest Córdoba, visible across the surrounding landscape. The fortress appears to have existed since at least 1245, though its distinctive main tower and defensive walls were constructed in the 15th century when it became a critical control point during the Reconquest, belonging to the Order of Calatrava. During the Peninsular War (1810-1812), French forces occupied and partially rebuilt the castle, recognizing its strategic importance. Access to the fortress requires ascending winding stairs through an arched doorway on Calle Rafael Canalejo Canteroy.
