Castillo de Arreba

Castillo de Arreba is a medieval fortress ruin located at Paso de la Nava in the Valle de Manzanedo region of Burgos province, documented from the 11th century with possibly older origins. Despite modest dimensions, this castle remarkably served as the administrative center of an extensive medieval district, governed by an official with authority over the surrounding territory. The site features stone walls of varying quality—some well-dressed, others rustic—with visible remains including the main tower wall, sections of perimeter walls, and entrance structures. An early medieval settlement occupies the base of the site where tombs have been discovered, and opposite rocky outcrops show evidence of additional tower remains. Today, the freely accessible archaeological site offers impressive panoramic views of the Zamanzas and Manzanedo valleys, with informational panels and improved access to the historic outcrop.
