Castillo de Anento

The Castillo de Anento crowns the highest point of the medieval municipality of Anento in Zaragoza, Aragon, at nearly 1,000 meters elevation. Originally built by Muslims in the 12th century on a strategically commanding reddish-earth hill, the fortress was conquered by Alfonso I and subsequently reformed with Gothic elements during the 14th century. The castle's terrain-adapted design features a moat carved into solid rock with access controlled by a drawbridge, demonstrating sophisticated medieval defensive engineering. Though partially ruined, the castle retains its dramatic front section spanning approximately 30 meters, including the access gate, distinctive twin towers, and defensive moat. Recently removed from Spain's Red List of Heritage in Danger, this fortress offers spectacular panoramic views and exemplifies Aragon's strategic medieval architecture between Christian and Muslim territories.
