Castillo de Almenara is a 10th-century Moorish fortress built on Roman foundations, strategically positioned atop a 175-meter hill overlooking the town and surrounding landscape in Castellón. The fortress features two distinctive towers—L'Agüelet, a historic stone structure accessible by ladder, and L'Agüeleta, a 19th-century restoration originally used for railway communication. Originally serving as a frontier defense between the taifas kingdoms, the castle was famously besieged by El Cid in 1098. Visitors can access the site via a scenic 4-kilometer circular walking trail from town, experiencing the remarkable Islamic military architecture that once controlled this strategic passage.
