Castillo de Alhama de Granada dominates the center of Alhama de Granada, built atop a 285-meter hill where an ancient Arab alcazaba once stood. Constructed in the 11th century from irregular stone and remodeled in the 19th century, this fortress played a pivotal role in the late-15th-century Christian conquest of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada, falling to the Catholic Monarchs in 1482. Painted in distinctive bright red, the castle remains visually prominent above the town, now designated as a Cultural Heritage Site. Today, a restaurant occupies the former fortress, allowing visitors to experience the historic setting while the castle itself remains privately owned and not accessible to the general public.
