Castillo de Alburquerque

Castillo de Alburquerque dominates a clifftop in the Sierra de San Pedro, Badajoz province, standing as one of La Raya's most outstanding medieval fortresses near the Portuguese border. Also known as Castillo de Luna after its principal builder, Álvaro de Luna, Master of the Order of Santiago, the fortress reflects the region's turbulent 12th and 13th centuries when Christian and Moorish forces repeatedly contested control. During the mid-15th century, Álvaro de Luna constructed the fortress's famous keep, symbolising noble authority over the territory. The castle retains multiple defensive elements including outer walls, gates, towers, bastions, and a 13th-century church dedicated to Santa María del Castillo within its courtyard, designated as a National Monument in 1924.
