Castèth-Leon

Castèth-Leon stands as the ruins of a pivotal medieval fortress located on elevated terrain in Es Bòrdes within the Val d'Aran region. Originally built in 1283 by Eustachi de Beaumarchais as a strategic watchtower controlling mountain passage from France, the structure evolved during the fourteenth century into a palace-fortress serving as the seat of royal governors. Following major reinforcement between 1588 and 1594 under King Philip II's border security initiatives, the castle was destroyed by the Duke of Berwick's forces in 1719 during the War of the Quadruple Alliance, leaving only fragmentary remains that testify to its former significance as the valley's principal stronghold.
