Castelo de Sobroso

Castelo de Sobroso commands a granitic rocky promontory 334 meters above sea level in Vilasobroso, Pontevedra, its strategic position earning it recognition as "the key of the Kingdom of Galicia." Though its exact date of origin remains uncertain, evidence suggests 9th-century foundations, with documented references appearing in the 12th century. The fortress comprises a 140-meter outer wall, a rectangular tower, and two-story residential quarters, the upper level reserved for nobility and the lower for guards. After abandoning its defensive role, the castle became an aristocratic residence until fading from prominence in the 17th century. Now housing a cultural and ethnographic museum with audiovisual installations creating multisensory experiences, the castle offers guided visits, forest trails, and connections to broader regional heritage tourism.
