Castelo de San Román

Castelo de San Román near Conturiz in Lugo province represents one of Galicia's most enigmatic structures, originally conceived as an incomplete convent in the early modern period before being converted to military fortification. The mystery surrounding this construction is enhanced by its architectural refinement: thick stone walls crowned with an ornamental cornice and distinctive concentric interior arches reflect sophisticated masonry work. Today trees, including chestnut and walnut, grow from its crown. The fortress stood near the historic royal road connecting Lugo to La Meseta, a key position on medieval travel routes.
